Metal Deck Roofing Sheets

A metal deck is a steel sheet cold roll formed into a ribbed or trapezoidal profile. In Malaysia it is mainly used for roofing and wall cladding on factories, warehouses, shops, car porches and homes.

Many contemporary house designs now use metal deck roofing instead of traditional clay or concrete tiles. The sheets are fixed to steel purlins or light gauge steel trusses with screws or a concealed clip lock system. Metal deck is lightweight, quick to install and well suited to Malaysia's hot, wet climate, which makes it both popular and cost effective.

Our metal decks are roll formed from coil supplied by established brands such as BlueScope, CSC Steel and Colourcoil. Pre-painted galvanised iron (PPGI) is the most commonly used coil. We are also a primary partner of BlueScope, whose range includes COLORBOND® (pre-painted steel), ZINCALUME® (aluminium zinc coated steel), PRIMAMAJU® (mid range) and ZACS® (economical range). BlueScope coil is widely specified for its durability and comes with product warranties.

Metal deck profiles (visible fastener)

A visible fastener metal deck, also known as a pierce fixed or through fastened deck, is the most widely used metal roofing and cladding system in Malaysia. The profiled sheets are fixed directly onto steel purlins or light gauge steel trusses with self-drilling screws through the crest of the ribs, so the screw heads stay visible on the finished roof. Each screw has a bonded EPDM rubber washer that seals the fixing point against rain. Fixing through the crest rather than the valley keeps the screws above the water running down the roof. Neighbouring sheets overlap at the side ribs to form a weathertight joint. The system is simple, quick to install and cost effective.

Our common profiles are shown below. Standard thicknesses range from 0.30mm to 0.46mm, and thicker gauges are available depending on coil and colour availability. A wide range of colours is available. The sheet width is standard, and lengths are cut to your requirements.

Standard metal deck

This is our standard profile. Its strong trapezoidal ribs give excellent rigidity and allow long spans, and they carry rainwater off the roof quickly. The sheet comes as a straight long span, or it can be curved into a half round arch or crimp curved to suit your project.

Half round

Our standard profile, curved into a half round arch.

Crimp curve

Our standard profile, crimp curved to suit your project.

URoll Bond

URoll Bond metal roof panels have the look of classic Euro clay tiles with the strength and efficiency of modern metal roofing. They balance style and performance, so they suit a wide range of buildings, from homes to commercial projects.

Mega Rib

Mega Rib metal deck has wide valleys that carry rainwater away faster than standard profiles. It can be laid at a roof pitch as low as 2°, compared with 3° for standard roofing, which makes it suitable for long roof spans.

Spandex

Spandex metal deck has closely spaced ribs that make the sheet rigid and give it a clean, uniform look. That makes it a popular choice for wall cladding. It can also be used for smaller roofs such as canopies and extensions.

Corrugated G.I. sheet

This is the classic wavy roofing sheet, commonly known as "zinc" roofing. It is the most economical option in our range, and ideal for temporary shelters and site hoarding.

Frequently asked questions

What type of fastener or screw should I use?

We recommend self-drilling screws rated at least Class 3 for corrosion resistance, fitted with EPDM sealing washers. The EPDM washer seals the screw hole against water, and Class 3 screws are built to withstand Malaysia's hot, humid climate. For coastal or industrial areas, consider Class 4 screws for extra protection.

How do I cut or trim the metal deck sheet?

Cut the sheets with a shear machine or tin snips (nibblers also work). These tools make a clean cut and do the least damage to the protective coating of the sheet. Do not use a grinder with a cutting disc: the heat burns the coating along the cut edge, and the hot metal sparks it throws off can land on nearby sheets and melt into the surface.

Clean the roof straight after installation. Sweep away all metal swarf, including filings from cutting, drilling and screw fixing, and any leftover screws and rivets. Swarf left on the roof rusts quickly and leaves rust stains that can damage the coating on the sheet.

Is there a limit to the length of the sheet?

No. We can produce any length you need, and the only practical limit is transport. Additional transport charges may apply for sheets longer than 30ft. If the sheets are too long to deliver, we can arrange on-site roll forming, where the sheets are made at your project site to the exact length required.

Is there a warranty for the sheet?

Yes. Our sheets come with a corrosion resistance warranty of 10 to 20 years, depending on the sheet thickness. Warranty terms and conditions apply, and the final coverage may also depend on the coil brand and the site environment, such as coastal or industrial areas. Contact us for the warranty details of your chosen product.

I need natural light through my roof. What are the options?

Translucent roofing sheets can be installed alongside your metal deck, overlapping it, to let daylight into the building. There are two main options:

  • Polycarbonate sheets are highly transparent, impact resistant and UV protected. They give bright, clear daylight and suit homes, car porches, walkways and commercial buildings.
  • Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets are translucent and spread the light more evenly, with less glare. They are economical and durable, which makes them popular for factories and warehouses.

Make sure the translucent sheet matches your metal deck profile, so the sheets overlap neatly and stay weathertight.

I would like to install it on a chicken poultry farm. Is metal deck suitable?

No, we do not recommend it. Poultry farms and other livestock buildings give off corrosive gases such as ammonia from animal waste, and so do fertiliser and chemical plants. These gases attack the coating and corrode metal deck much faster than normal, which shortens the life of the roof. For these places we recommend uPVC roofing sheets instead. uPVC is highly resistant to chemical corrosion and holds up well against these gases.

Concealed metal deck (hidden fastener)

A concealed metal deck, also known as a clip lock or hidden fastener system, gives a clean, sleek roof with no exposed screws. Instead of being screwed through the sheet, the profiled panels are clipped onto concealed brackets fixed to the steel purlins or light gauge steel trusses. Each sheet snaps or seams onto the next one, locking the panels together and hiding every fixing point beneath the roof surface.

With no holes drilled through the sheet, there are far fewer places for water to get in. That lowers the risk of leaks and avoids the worn washers and rusting screw heads that exposed fixings can develop over time. The clip system also lets the sheets expand and contract freely in Malaysia's heat, which makes it well suited to long roof runs and low pitch roofs.

Concealed metal deck costs more than a visible fastener system, but it offers a premium look, better weathertightness and lower long term maintenance. It is a popular choice for modern homes, bungalows, commercial buildings and architectural projects where appearance matters.

The common profiles are shown below. The sheet width is standard, and lengths are cut to your requirements. A wide range of colours is available, subject to coil availability.

Clip lock

This clip lock roofing system uses wide, flat pans with raised ribs, held down by bracket clips. The clips are screwed to the purlins first. Each sheet is then pressed down over them, so its ribs snap onto the clips and interlock with the next sheet, and no screws pass through the roof surface. The result is a clean, modern roof that is highly weathertight.

Snap-on cap concealed system

This system combines the easy installation of a pierce fixed deck with the clean look of a concealed roof. The sheets are first screwed through the crest of each rib into the purlins, as with a standard metal deck. A snap-on cap is then pressed over the rib. It clips firmly into place, covering the screw heads completely and adding a second layer of weather protection at every fixing point.

Insulated metal deck

Malaysia's hot, humid climate can make buildings under a bare metal roof uncomfortably warm, and noisy during heavy rain. Metal deck with insulation reduces both problems. A layer of insulating material is bonded to the metal sheet. It cuts heat build up, lowers the energy needed for cooling, reduces condensation and softens the sound of rain. The underside also looks neater, and in some uses it can be left exposed as a ceiling.

There are two main ways to insulate a metal deck roof.

Metal deck with bonded PU foam

A layer of polyurethane (PU) foam is bonded to the underside of the metal sheet in the factory, usually with an aluminium foil, PVC or PU metal backing. Each sheet arrives on site as a ready made insulated panel, so it is installed exactly like a standard metal deck, with no extra layers or labour. The method is hassle free, quick and cost efficient, and it gives a neat, finished underside. It suits homes, car porches, shophouses and offices where reasonable heat reduction and a fast installation are the main goals.

Thickness 0.30mm to 0.46mm

Metal deck with mineral wool insulation

Here, a mineral insulation such as rock wool or glass wool is installed as a separate layer beneath the metal deck. It is usually laid over wire mesh with an aluminium foil layer that reflects heat and controls condensation. Because it is used in much thicker layers than bonded PU foam, it gives better heat and sound insulation. It is especially good at muffling heavy rain, and rock wool also adds non combustible fire resistance. The trade off is that each layer has to be installed separately on site, which takes more labour and costs more. It is the preferred choice for factories, warehouses and any building where comfort, acoustics or fire safety are a priority.

Insulated PU panel

PU Panel 350 is a decorative panel with a steel face and a polyurethane (PU) foam core. It combines good looks with practical performance. The PU core gives excellent heat insulation and good sound absorption, and it keeps the ceiling or wall stable and rigid. The panels interlock with a concealed fastener system, so no screws show on the finished surface.

The panels come in a wide range of realistic wood grain and solid colour finishes. They suit interior and exterior walls, ceilings and feature walls in homes, house extensions, hotels, restaurants, school halls, hospitals and airport kiosks, especially where the finish needs to be decorative.

Roofing accessories

A metal roof needs the right accessories to stay weathertight and look finished. As the illustration shows, flashings and cappings are fitted at every key point of the roof: along the ridges and hips, down the valleys, at the gable edges and eaves, and where the roof meets a wall. They seal the joints and edges against rain and give the roof a clean, finished look.

All our accessories are custom made to suit your roof design and the profile you choose. They include ridge and hip cappings, valleys, flashings, barge trims and gutters. Each piece is folded to your required shape and size and matched to your roof colour, so the whole system fits well, performs well and looks neat.
